HOW TO PULL A MANE WITHOUT A BATTLE

How do I pull a mane without a battle on a horse that hates mane pulling? Steal my easy, stress-free strategy for how to pull a horses’ mane without a battle in this post and the video below.  And these mane pulling tips are golden!

Because let’s face it.

A mane pulling fight isn’t something any rider wants to have with their horse.  And a mane pulled to an even thickness will help you create even braid spacing. That even braid spacing is a defining braid characteristic that makes your hunt seat or dressage horse stand out in the show ring.

Plus, a properly pulled mane is both faster and easier to braid!  In fact, for every minute you spend on quality mane preparation, you’ll save two minutes of time when braiding.

And that is awesome!

Mane Pulling - The Peacful Way

DOES YOUR HORSE HATE MANE PULLING?

Do you own a horse that becomes a dragon when you try to pull his mane?  I can relate because my horse, Dusty, is NOT a fan of mane pulling.  The problem is that he has a very thick mane that must be thinned and evened out for good, fast braiding.  And I’m just not up for a battle with my horse that I adore.

A PAINLESS MANE PULLING SOLUTION

To solve this problem I use a mane pulling technique that works surprisingly well and it’s painless for you and your horse.   In fact, Dusty actually RELAXES when I pull his mane using this technique.  To share this technique with you, I created an impromptu video when my son walked into the barn recently while I was pulling Dusty’s mane.   Check out my technique for thinning a thick mane without starting a battle with your horse.  This is information that every equestrian should have in their bag of horse tricks.

Mane Pulling PAINLESSLY

CONCLUSION

Here’s what you learned about How to Pull a Horses’ Mane using this stress-free mane pulling strategy:

  • Backcomb a small section of hair up high toward the scalp.
  • Wrap the remaining hair around your pulling comb (near the scalp) and place your thumb on top.
  • Hold steady downward pressure on the hair until the hair releases on its own. You’ll feel the hairs “pop” when they release.
  • Work across the thick areas of the mane while using this method.
  • It’s best to do a little mane pulling each day (if possible) until the mane thickness is even.
  • Use this technique after exercising your horse because the pores are open and the mane releases easier.
  • If the hair doesn’t release, you’ve probably taken too large of a hair section. Just thin it out and try again.
  • Always thin the mane first, and then shorten the mane. Because pulling a mane will shorten it somewhat.
